[edit] Description

Phantasmagorical, sensual, largely monochromatic deck of 22 Trumps by artist Jose Roosevelt created for the 1993 exhibition "Le Tarot" at the Chateau de Gruyères in Switzerland. The cards were published with a booklet containing poems by Marie-Claire Dewarrat about the Major Arcana. The Castle of Gruyères is the only official place where you can purchase this card deck. Roosevelt's artwork reflects Oswald Wirth's theory (described in his book Le Tarot des Imagiers du Moyen Age) that the Trumps depict a symbolic tracing of two opposing initiatory paths: active reason and passive mysticism. Each drawing is rife with embedded symbolism and detail which extends to the elaborate borders. (n.b. The Wheel of Fortune is not monochromatic; for reasons left unexplained, it includes areas of bold red.)
