  • 1499 – “Hypnerotomachia Poliphili” (Poliphilo's Strife of Love in a Dream) is published in Venice. It is a symbolic romance richly illustrated with enigmatic images, including a number of pseudo-Egyptian hieroglyphs. The allegorical meaning of the text is hidden behind the complex structure devised by the author, who to this day has not been identified with certainty.
