[edit] Description
Rachel Pollack's legendary text is a hands-on rumination about the structure and meaning in the cards of the Waite-Smith Tarot. Drawing on her vast experience, Pollack finds ways to make one see the cards as if for the first time. The books three sections investigate the Majors, the Minors, and the reading process in that order. Pollack covers the Trumps in depth, dividing them into 3 sets of 7 (with the Fool placed apart) that reflect 3 kinds of growth: external, internal, and archetypal. She covers the Minor Arcana with equal insight, using number, element and Qabalah to deepen interpretations.
The book's sections are as follows:
- Part One - The Major Arcana
- The Four Card Pattern
- The Overview
- The Opening Trumps: Symbols and Archetypes
- The Worldly Sequence
- Turning Inwards
- The Great Journey
- Part Two - The Minor Arcana
- Wands
- Cups
- Swords
- Pentacles
- Part Three - Readings
- Types of Readings
- How to Use Tarot Readings
- What We Learn from Tarot Readings
This book was originally published in two volumes; the 1997 edition is revised and contains a new preface by Pollack.
- Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom: Part I, the Major Arcana. Amsterdam: Uitgeverij W. N. Schors.
