The Payen is what is often referred to as a ‘TdM-I’ type deck. In other words, the earlier (‘type-1’) of the two major kinds of decks in what has come to be called the ‘Marseille’ style.

Jean Payen (born around 1654 - died in 1731), merchant-cartier in Avignon, France. His elder son Jean-Pierre Payen (1683-1757) takes over the business in 1731.
